For Sergio Vale, CNN Specialist in economics, employment figures in Brazil show a consistent and positive recovery. The pace at which this happens, however, is slower than would be desirable given the still high levels of unemployment.
“The unemployment rate has remained high since the recessive cycle of 2015 and 2016 and we have not yet been able to break the barrier and return to a single-digit number, but we see positive evolution in practically all numbers”, he said. “Formal hiring is higher, there is a slight drop in informality. Those are good numbers.”
The unemployment rate in Brazil stood at 11.2% in the moving quarter ended in February, informed the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) this Thursday (31), in the Pnad Contínua (Continuous National Household Sample Survey) .
This is the lowest rate for a quarter ending in February since 2016. However, the country still has 12 million unemployed.
“There are many difficulties and many uncertainties ahead, and for that reason the unemployment rate is not expected to return to single digits so fast, not this year, just as the number of unemployed, at 12 million, is expected to remain in double digits, above than 10 million.”
