The leading US epidemiologist, Dr. Anthony Fauci will step down at the end of the year from his positions at the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and as the White House’s chief medical adviser, he announced Monday.
“Although I am stepping down from my current positions, I am not retiring,” Fauci said.
“After more than 50 years in government positions, I plan to pursue the next phase of my career as I still have so much energy and passion for my field,” he added.
The 81-year-old infectious disease expert took over as director of NIAID in 1984 and in 2020 became the face of the US government’s efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
He has served as an advisor to seven US presidents, starting with Ronald Reagan, on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, as well as on West Nile virus, the 2001 anthrax crises, the flu pandemic, Ebola, Zika, and most recently, Covid and monkey pox.
He first joined the National Institutes of Health in 1968 at the age of 27, where he quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 1984.
Last month, Fauci told Reuters he planned to retire by the end of President Joe Biden’s first term, but that it could happen much sooner.
