“End of the era of fat cows” says the German finance minister

Total costs 445 billion euros, down 30 billion from the previous year, but also up 90 billion from 2019, the last year before the pandemic predicts draft budget for 2024 which the German Finance Minister testified today Christian Lindner.

“The years of fat cows are over,” comments the first channel of the German public television ARD on its website, referring to the spirit of the new budget. In 2024 all ministries, except the Ministry of Defense, should move to cost savingsafter the suspension of the “debt brake” for the period 2020-2022, which was decided in order to deal with the economic consequences of the pandemic, but also of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As reported by the Athenian and Macedonian News Agency, it is estimated that large savings will result from the reduction of pension insurance subsidies and health care insurance, as well as from the cessation of child benefit to high-income families. At the same time, the gastronomy sector is already reacting to the reinstatement of the old VAT, while the industry is asking for state aid or tax breaks due to the increased cost of electricity.

“The “debt brake“is a guarantee that future generations will not be burdened with interest payments,” said the responsible Liberal Party (FDP) MP Otto Fricke, while, according to ARD, many in the Social Democratic Party (SPD) – including Chancellor Olaf Soltz – and from the Greens, they would like the “debt brake” to remain suspended and more funds to be allocated to climate protection investments.
