The secretary of the League, Matteo Salvini, shuffled the political deck again, in view of the beginning of the voting for the election of the new president of the Italian republic, on the 24th of the month.
At the end of last week, the Italian center-right officially expressed its support for the candidacy of Silvio Berlusconi.
Today, however, Salvini wanted to address the whole issue again, asking Berlusconi to “say, in an official way”, by the 24th of the month, if he wants to be a candidate.
At the same time, the secretary of the League stated that “next week, his party will propose a new name for the office of president of the republic, which can convince many, if not all”.
Salvini also stressed that the country, in a difficult phase such as the one it is going through, must be able to rely on a strong government. Which means he does not want to go to the polls early.
The statements of the head of the League, according to many analysts, show that – in addition to the candidacy of “Cavaliere” – the Italian center-right is preparing some alternatives.
An interpretation that is reinforced by the statements of Cavaliere’s close friend and collaborator, MP Vittorio Scarby. “In case he fails, I advised Silvio to make the move himself and, as a surprise, propose another name: Mario Draghi or even President Sergio Matarella, for a second term,” Scarby said.
