Enel mobilizes employees from other countries to help with the blackout; 400 thousand remain without electricity in SP

Enel, the concessionaire responsible for supplying electricity in São Paulo, states that it mobilized professionals from its distributors from other countries to help restore the service during the blackout affecting the city.

The power outage has affected around 2.1 million customers since last Friday (11). According to the company, by 2pm on Monday (14), Enel had restored power to around 1.7 million people.

In a statement, the company stated that professionals from its distributors in Chile, Italy, Spain and Argentina, as well as teams from Rio de Janeiro and Ceará were mobilized and arrived this weekend.

Enel Distribuição São Paulo also said that it received reinforcements from teams from other energy distribution groups, such as Light, Neoenergia, Elektro, EDP, to work in the company’s concession area.

The concessionaire stated that the teams continue working to restore service to around 400 thousand customers after the storm and strong winds of more than 107 km/h last Friday (11).

Also in a note, the company assured that it will meet the three-day deadline to fully restore energy supply to all customers, in agreement made with Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency).

“In addition to the impacts on low voltage networks, 17 high voltage lines and 11 substations were disconnected during the heavy rain. The damage to the high voltage network was resolved on Saturday,” said the company.

Enel further explained that at low and medium voltage, the impacts were severe and spread across the concession area. Furthermore, repairs to low voltage networks involve replacing kilometers of cables, poles, among other equipment.

“To meet critical cases, Enel has made 500 generators (40 large) available for essential services, such as hospitals, and customers who depend on electricity to maintain hospital equipment, for example,” said Enel.

Cities most affected at the moment:

  • São Paulo (283 thousand homes without electricity): Jabaquara, Santo Amaro, Pedreira and Campo Limpo neighborhoods
  • Cotia (31 thousand customers without power)
  • Taboão da Serra (32 thousand impacted)

Impacts of power outages

The lack of energy in the city of São Paulo has caused significant damage to several sectors of the city, especially bars and restaurants. In addition to establishments, residents have already recorded more than 64 hours without power with records of spoiled food, in addition to a lack of water.

State hospital units were also left without power and had the help of the Civil Defense of SP, this Saturday (12), to supply fuel to continue the operation of the generators.

The wind and heavy rain on Friday night (11) left at least seven dead across the state, according to Civil Defense.
