Energy and investments in the meeting of K. Mitsotakis with the president of the United Arab Emirates

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met at the Maximos Palace with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is visiting Greece.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis congratulated the President of the United Arab Emirates on assuming his new duties and referred to the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Athens, on your first official visit in your new capacity. Allow me to congratulate you on taking on this very important responsibility. You know how much value we attach to our countries’ bilateral relations. We have already much and we will do even more in terms of our level of cooperation.

Also, I am particularly pleased that the UAE will be the honored country at the most important International Exhibition of Thessaloniki, which will take place in less than a month from today in Thessaloniki. And we hope – if your schedule allows – to have you with us again as the head of an important business mission at this very important event. Again, welcome,” the Prime Minister said at the start of the meeting.

“Thank you very much, Mr. Prime Minister. Thank you for this very beautiful weather. If you arranged it for us, thank you very much. We are looking for rain, but you certainly have a very beautiful country. Again, I am excited to be here with you .I apologize for delaying my visit so much, but the relationship between us is very important and my main concern is to see that relationship bear fruit.

We have worked to build a bridge between our countries. I am very happy that in the last two years we have made great progress. And our relationship is at a point where it can be upgraded even more. We already have a very strong foundation on which to build. Mr. Prime Minister, I want to express once again my pleasure to be here with you,” noted Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his part.

The meeting was held in a particularly warm atmosphere, indicative of the mutual interest in further deepening the already excellent bilateral relations and their strategic character in all areas of common interest.

It is noted that the “Joint Declaration on the establishment of a Broad Strategic Partnership between Greece and the UAE”, and the “Cooperation Agreement in Foreign Policy and Defense Matters”, which were signed during the Prime Minister’s visit to Abu Dhabi on November (17 and 18) 2021 is the strong basis of the expansion of cooperation.

During the talks, emphasis was placed on the energy sector, in particular on renewable energy sources. The Prime Minister informed about the important infrastructures being created in our country in the field of import, storage and regasification of Liquefied Natural Gas, which together with its strategic geographical position make it a hub and gateway for energy to Europe as well as a connecting bridge Middle East with Europe.

The prospects of strengthening investment relations following the recent official visit of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Abu Dhabi, last May, were also discussed.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized that the United Arab Emirates is a stable strategic partner of Greece, with an important role in the Gulf region and internationally.

The Prime Minister also underlined the need to ensure stability and peace in the Southeast Mediterranean, as the last thing the region needs at this critical geopolitical juncture, when the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine are testing the European and international security environment, is a focus of tension in the region .

Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his satisfaction over the fact that the United Arab Emirates will be the honored country at the 86th International Exhibition of Thessaloniki, and once again invited the President of the United Arab Emirates to visit Greece on the occasion of TIF.

In the extended meeting of the two leaders with the participation of the two delegations, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Diplomacy and External Affairs Costas Fragogiannis, the Director of the Diplomatic Office of the Prime Minister Ambassador Anna Maria Boura, the National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister Thanos Dokos participated on the Greek side. , the Deputy Government Spokesperson Aristotelia Peloni and the Prime Minister’s adviser on Energy issues Nikos Tsafos.
