Energy consumption increases 1.4% in the first half, points out CCEE

Electricity consumption increased by 1.4% in Brazil during the first half of 2022, compared to the same period last year.

The information is from the Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE).

The agency points out that, in the period, 66,028 average megawatts were consumed, a growth driven by the recovery of important economic sectors, such as beverages, food and services, in addition to the good moment for exports.

The increase was driven by the 6.6% growth registered in the free market, an environment in which energy is supplied to industry and large consumers, such as shopping malls and large retail chains.

This modality was responsible for 35.5% of energy demand in the first six months of the year.

The regulated environment, however, showed a decrease of 1.3% in the comparison of the same period.

The CCEE points out, as reasons for the drop, the migration of consumers to the free market and the increase in installations of distributed micro and mini-generation systems. That is: solar panels installed in homes and businesses.

In an analysis that disregards the migration of consumption modalities, the regulated environment would present a rise of 0.4%, according to the chamber, against 2.9% for the free environment.

In the semester, as already anticipated by the CNN the sector with the highest proportional increase in consumption was wood, paper and cellulose: 15.8%, due to the increase in demand caused by the war in Ukraine.

The textile industry, with retraction of 4.5%, was the segment that presented the biggest drop in the period.

Altogether, eight of the 26 federation units that make up the National Interconnected System (SIN) showed a drop in energy consumption in the analyzed period.

This is the case of Amazonas, Amapá, Pará, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Rio de Janeiro, states distributed in three regions of the country.

“In places where there was a reduction, the CCEE observed greater amounts of rain and milder temperatures, which led to a lower use of appliances such as air conditioning and, consequently, a reduction in demand for energy”, says an excerpt from the report by consumption.

The states with the greatest increase in electricity use in the semester were: Rondônia (10%), Mato Grosso (8%) and Santa Catarina (4%).
