Energy consumption rises 2.6% in July and hydroelectric generation soars, says CCEE

Electricity consumption in Brazil increased 2.6% in July compared to the same period in 2021, reaching 63,083 average megawatts, driven by demand in the free energy market, according to the Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE).

According to the institution’s survey, consumption in the free market rose 7.1% compared to July 2021, to an average of 23,458 MW.

Among the sectors that contract the input freely, the highest increases were observed in the wood, paper and cellulose industries (18.9%), beverages (13.9%) and services (7.6%), while the largest decreases came from textiles (-4.1%) and non-metallic minerals (-1.5%).

In the regulated market, served by the distributors, consumption had a slight increase of 0.3%, to an average of 39,625 MW, reflecting the rise in temperature in much of the country, with the exception of the Northeast region.

The CCEE points out that the performance of consumption in the different markets has been influenced by two structural factors in the sector: the migration of loads to the free market and the expansion of distributed energy generation.

Disregarding the migration of consumers, the regulated market would have grown 4.2% in July, while the free market would have registered a high of 2.1%.

In the case of distributed generation –solar panels installed in homes and businesses–, the CCEE calculated that, if this type of technology had not been available, the regulated market would have shown higher consumption growth in July, of 2.5%.

Generation and import of energy

CCEE’s energy generation data showed that hydroelectric plants supplied an average of 45,022 MW of electricity to the National Interconnected System (SIN) in July, a volume 32.7% higher compared to the same period in 2021, due to the good recovery of the reservoirs. .

Consequently, there was less dependence on thermal generation, which fell by 54% in the period.

Among renewables, solar energy production increased by 66.7%, while wind energy increased by 16.7%.

Brazil also exported an average of 986 MW of electricity to Argentina and Uruguay in July.
