Energy situation in Ukraine “remains difficult”, says state energy company

Ukraine continues to face a “difficult” energy situation, according to state-owned energy supplier Ukrenergo.

“We all have a tough warm-up season ahead of us,” the company said in an update on Monday.

Russian forces deliberately targeted power infrastructure in Ukraine, where authorities struggle to maintain power, water and cell phone connectivity.

This weekend, however, Ukrenergo said that “it was possible to apply the minimum amount of emergency shutdowns”, in part due to the increased capacity of nuclear power plants.

The company also noted an increase in electricity consumption “due to both the beginning of the week and the drop in temperatures across the country”.

Temperatures in Kiev reached -7ºC on Monday (5), according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.

Russian attacks on critical facilities have eased over the past week, but Ukrenergo is struggling to get damaged facilities back online.
