In an interview with CNN on Thursday night (26), the professor of International Relations at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) Mauricio Santoro stated that it is interesting for the United States, at the moment, to have some kind of engagement with the Brazil.
On Tuesday (24), US President Joe Biden sent former Senator Christopher Dodd to communicate his intention to meet with President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in a separate meeting from the Summit of the Americas, which will be held in Los Angeles. between the 6th and 10th of June.
“From the moment Russia invaded Ukraine and the United States began to have this political confrontation with the Russians and, to some extent, with the Chinese, this need for a dialogue with Brazil gained strength due to the importance that it [Brasil] has in Latin America”, he evaluated.
Santoro stressed that it is interesting for the US to have contact with the Brazilian government due to issues such as the region’s larger territory, population and economy.
The professor points out that, for a year and a half, what the Biden administration has been doing with Latin America “is putting out fires and responding to specific crises in several countries”.
“An immigration crisis involving Central America, the assassination of the president of Haiti, the protests in Cuba, the authoritarianism of the governments in Venezuela and Nicaragua, but there is really no collective vision for the region,” Santoro said.
The expert also said that there is an economic dispute between the US and China over Latin America.
“Dispute that the Chinese have won, mainly between the countries of South America, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia. Countries with a larger, more diversified economy that are not as dependent on the US,” he says.
