Engineer creates coconut-based product to clean up oil spills

Last year, an oil spill in the Puerto Asís lagoon in Putumayo, Colombia, caused terrible damage to the area and sparked a debate on the ecological measures that were previously taken or not in this type of cases.

To help repair the damage, expert oil engineer Duvanis Herazo Navajas set out to create an alternative to the use of imported chemicals that usually clean water pollution from oil spills.

It is a mixture of surfactants, which are extracted from plants such as quinoa and coconut, and that when they come into contact with oil, help it to decompose into simpler structures, and there the native bacteria present in the environment , they degrade it.

Navajas has already used his creation in different oil spills around Colombia, such as in the Amazon River, where the bottom of the river managed to restore itself in a matter of weeks or in an area with usually cold waters that the emulsifier managed to clean without problems.

This great invention came to help in different areas of Latin America. However, it is hoped that it is not necessary, since the main thing is to avoid these types of ecological disasters that usually devastate entire areas of wildlife.

Meanwhile, this ecological and biodegradable alternative proved to be a viable and sustainable alternative to restore entire ecosystems, avoiding the short and long-term consequences caused by chemicals.
