Engineer suspected of running over and killing man during pilgrimage is arrested in MG

A 27-year-old civil engineer, suspected of running over and killing a 54-year-old pilgrim, was arrested this Monday (30) by the Civil Police of Minas Gerais in Ituiutaba, in the interior of the state.

The police carried out search and seizure warrants and preventive arrest against the person being investigated. The case happened on August 14th.

According to the delegate responsible for the investigations, Rafael de Freitas Faria, the pilgrim was hit while walking on a city street and finishing the pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Abadia.

After the collision, the driver fled without providing assistance. The victim was rescued by other drivers who passed by the scene and called SAMU. However, the man succumbed to his injuries and died.

Investigators had access to images from a security camera, which captured the moment of the collision, in addition to revealing the vehicle and who was driving it.

The delegate states that “given the dynamics of the run-over revealed by the strong images collected, the investigation concluded that the run-over was intentional and works with the hypothesis of attempted murder”.

The investigation also found that, after the accident, the person under investigation sought to repair the damage caused to the vehicle and then exchanged it for another, as it was a car rented by the company he works for.

For the police, these facts demonstrate the suspect’s intention to hide the evidence of the hit-and-run.

The civil engineer was preventively arrested and sent to a prison unit in Ituiutaba (MG), where he will be available to the courts.
