England: 1 in 15 people had Covid in the last week of 2021, data say

An estimated 1 in 15 people across England tested positive for Covid-19 in the week ended December 31, 2021, the National Bureau of Statistics (ONS) reported on Wednesday (5), above 1 in 25 in the previous week.

The number corresponds to 3,270,800 people, with London having the highest percentage of cases, at a rate of 1 in 10, according to the data.

“There have been some initial signs in the closing days of 2021 that infections may no longer be rising in London, but it is too early to suggest whether this is a continuing shift in the trend,” the ONS said in a statement on Wednesday.

Infections increased “rapidly” across the UK, with Ômicron as the dominant variant, according to the ONS. Scotland and Wales recorded 1 in 20 people with Covid-19, and Northern Ireland recorded 1 in 25.

The statistics count infections that occur in private households and exclude infections reported in hospitals, nursing homes and other community settings, noted the ONS.
