England: Fourth dose vaccine for those over 75

Elderly and vulnerable groups can be vaccinated from today. Thoughts on extending the vaccination program with 4th dose for everyone from autumn.

From today, Monday, in England, the distribution of the fourth dose or the extra booster jab starts for those who are over 75 years old, for those who live in nursing homes and for those who are over 12 years old and belong to the vulnerable groups. This affects around five million people across the UK. It is emphasized that adults entitled to a fourth dose will be given either the Moderna vaccine or the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, while those 12 to 18 years of age will be given only the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.

England is the third of the four nations in the UK to launch “spring commemorative” installments as Wales and Scotland have already launched the program earlier in March.

The measure is being made at the urging of the British Commission on Vaccination and Immunity (JCVI) in order to strengthen the protection of the most vulnerable as according to the latest official data from the National Statistical Office (ONS) the cases have started to rise again. It is typical that on a weekly basis one in 20 people in the UK is infected with the coronavirus. Health Minister Saajit Javid reiterated that “we must learn to live with COVID, but always operating with logic and prudence.” The philosophy and approach of the government has changed so much that the publication of cases, imports and deaths is now done not on a daily basis but on a weekly basis.

No measures against the pandemic in England

It is recalled that for a month now England has absolutely no measures against the pandemic. Masks and distances have been abolished everywhere, even on public transport, while the imposition of quarantine on those who test positive for the coronavirus has been abolished. Three days ago, on March 18, the borders for vaccinated or not were fully opened as there is no need for a test to enter the country, nor the completion of the well-known PLF.

Experts point out that although the winter is coming to an end – which is considered the most dangerous for the spread of the virus – the additional dose of vaccine is considered necessary as the strength of the previous one weakens. Vaccination of the fourth dose is expected to be extended to the other age groups in the fall.
