Two pigs entered the Lightcliffe golf course in Yorkshire, England, disrupting play and even injuring some players who tried to evict them.
They first appeared on Sunday, recalls President Philip Marshall, though he told the CNN Sport that the club “does not know where they came from”.
“One of our golfers saw these pigs on the field and tried to chase them away, but he suffered a cut on his leg and had to go to the emergency room for an injection,” Marshall said. “And then they disappeared, we thought they were gone.
“On Tuesday they reappeared, one of the players tried to frighten one of them, who turned on him and cut his leg. So he had to get a tetanus shot, but he’s already fine,” he said.
Although Marshall describes the injuries as minor cuts, they both went to the emergency room as a precaution, as they were injuries caused by a wild animal.
‘Obviously dangerous’
As golf club members were unable to corner the pigs, they decided to contain the damage and wait for outside help.
Marshall claims he called the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) and the local police. Police said that looking for the pigs was not their jurisdiction and that the RSPCA would come and help when they could, but they “were overloaded”.
“What happened is, I was there most of the day until nightfall and we were able to drive them across the field,” explains Marshall.
“So we took them to the end of the field and left them there. We couldn’t get close to them, we closed the field because they are obviously dangerous. They were, Tuesday night, on the side road outside the golf club. They were put on transporters and taken away. We don’t know where they are from or what happened to them.”
Lightcliffe has since reopened to the public and is offering an added bonus to anyone who signs up to play. “For anyone who books online and comes out to play, we’re giving away a free bacon sandwich,” Marshall said.
