Enterprise Greece: Positive opinion on Microsoft ‘Investment in Data Centers in Greece’ project

The Board of Directors of the Hellenic Investment and Foreign Trade Company (Enterprise Greece), at its meeting of April 1, 2022, gave a positive opinion to the D.E.S.E. for the inclusion of the Investment Plan “Investment in Data Centers in Greece” of the company Microsoft Operations 4733 Hellas Single Member SA

The project concerns the creation of a Complex of Data Centers and Technological Support of Businesses consisting of three (3) Data Centers (Data Centers), in two different installation areas, within the Attica Region (Spata and Koropi), in order to develop and provide Computer services Cloud (Microsoft Cloud) in Greece (Microsoft 365, Microsoft Azure, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform).

Data Centers are used to store, process and share large amounts of data to users / clients, while Cloud computing refers to the provision of computing resources via the Internet (eg servers, apps, etc.), by central systems that are located away from the end user and which serve the users by automating processes, providing a variety of facilities and connection flexibility.

The investor is a subsidiary of Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited, with the ultimate shareholder being Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), the fourth largest software / technology company in the world. Microsoft Corp. has been present in Greece since 1992, while operating worldwide about 200 Data Centers, in 34 countries, interconnected by more than 165,000 miles of submarine, land and within metropolitan areas of fiber optics. Microsoft Cloud already serves at least one (1) billion customers and twenty (20) million companies worldwide. The total amount of the investment not only meets the 100 million euro limit set by the legal framework for strategic investments, but will amount to several hundred million and create 300 new jobs over a decade.

Referring to the investment plan, the Secretary General of International Economic Relations and Extroversion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and President of Enterprise Greece, Mr. Ioannis Smyrlis, noted that “the implementation of this investment is of great importance for the Greek economy as it expands the Communications, certifies in the best possible way that the industry offers unique opportunities for investment in value-added services on a global scale, and is a vote of confidence in the country’s economy.
