A small door on the front door of a private home can be a great way to give a pet access to the house when he wants it – the owner does not have to get up in the middle of the night to let the dog out for a walk or let the cat in. But, of course, free access to the pet home sometimes leads to unwanted visitors, as stray animals also get free access to the user’s home. And the authors of the Petvation project solved this problem with the help of a smart pet door, artificial intelligence-based technologies and a regular mobile application.
The ambitious project decided to use hardware and software to recognize the “faces” of pets – thanks to this, the smart door ensures that only authorized family members get inside the house, and stray cats and dogs do not get access to the house. To do this, the authors of the Petvation project propose to install a special installation on one of the entrance doors of the house, which is equipped with infrared cameras on both sides of the access point. These cameras are equipped with a 120-degree field of view lens, which allows the surveillance system to track pets from a wide angle. In addition, the door is equipped with a night vision system to work not only during the day, but also at night.
As a result, the AI-based system, when a pet approaches, launches special algorithms that evaluate the appearance of the pet and recognize it based on a variety of parameters. Petvation said that identifying and authorizing an animal’s face is a more difficult process than a similar procedure with humans, so the entire body with characteristic features is used to recognize a pet. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the smart system can recognize not only cats or dogs, but also many other animals – raccoons, ducks, foxes and even snakes.

And in the event that artificial intelligence determines that the pet is indeed living in this house, the Petvation smart door will authorize the dog or cat, after which it will raise the motorized door to access the premises. Moreover, the door will close so quickly that an unwanted guest standing behind an authorized pet cannot enter the house. However, at a cost of $ 169, there is practically no chance of a massive popularity of the new door.
