The enthusiasts of the well-known iFixit portal have disassembled another novelty from Apple – this time the AirTag beacon hit the “operating table”.

The first of a two-part AirTag showdown, which is scheduled for publication by iFixit, has now been published. At the moment, experts note the impressive design solutions that Apple engineers have found to achieve this compactness, including the unusual location of the speaker.

IFixit compared AirTag to competing beacons – Tile Mate and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag. The AirTag is the smallest of the three, with the largest battery space (relatively).

One of the notable design differences is the lack of a dedicated keychain hole in the AirTag. IFixit attributes this to Apple’s tradition of turning “essential functions into premium optional accessories.” Simply put, in order to use the AirTag as a key fob, you will either need to buy an expensive additional accessory-cover, or go a roundabout way and drill the required hole yourself.
