Environment, Italy will also have a “special envoy for climate change”

A “special envoy for climate change”, on the model of the United States (where the post is held by John Kerry, former vice president), United Kingdom, France and Germany. This is the person in charge of following the negotiations and representing the country at all international tables. For Italy, he will be nominated in September.

This was announced on social media by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, who wrote on his Facebook page that “from the latest UN report it emerges an alarming picture. The rate at which the Earth’s temperature has grown over the past 50 years is not comparable to that of the past 2,000 years. Thus the prospect is also the increase of catastrophic events such as floods and storms. It is a theme that affects us all and every aspect of our life. We need to give an effective answer, without wasting time ».

For this reason, the Government has “decided to equip our country with a strategic figure in this field”. And again: “Let’s act immediately, the future of the planet is at stake and our children “.

Among the possible candidates for the role there is a shortlist of three names: they are all women, with experience of international assignments on these issues. One of them would be the favorite, but her name is not yet known. The appointment of the special climate envoy should also help speed up the achievement of the target of 55 percent emissions cut compared to 1990 by 2030.
