United States officials, Korea South Korea and Japan met in Seoul on Friday to prepare for “all contingencies” amid signs that the Korea North is preparing to conduct a nuclear test for the first time since 2017.
US Special Representative Sung Kim met with his colleagues from Korea of the South and Japan, Kim Gunn and Funakoshi Takehiro, after an American assessment that the Korea North is preparing its test site at Punggye-ri for what would be its seventh nuclear test.
“We are preparing for all contingencies in close coordination with our Japanese and South Korean allies,” Kim said at the start of the meeting.
This year, the Korea North has tested several ballistic missiles, including one believed to be its largest intercontinental ballistic missile, in violation of UN resolutions.
“We want to make it clear to the Korea the North that its illegal and destabilizing activities have consequences and that the international community will not accept these actions as normal,” the US envoy said.
The newly appointed nuclear diplomat from Korea South Kim Gunn stated that the “relentless pursuit of Korea of the North by nuclear weapons will only end up strengthening our deterrence”.
Last week, the United States called for more UN sanctions against Korea North because of its ballistic missile launches, but China and Russia vetoed the suggestion, publicly splitting the UN Security Council over the Korea the North for the first time since it began punishing it in 2006, when the country carried out its first nuclear test.
