Epilogue for COP26

On the last day of the United Nations Climate Conference, a second renewed draft agreement between the countries was published. Insufficient analysts say.

Countdown to COP26 in Glasgow, after two weeks of controversial discussions. This morning, the second draft agreement of the countries was published, which aims to reverse the phenomenon of climate change and to achieve the coveted goal of maintaining the increase of the earth’s temperature until 2100 at 1.5 degrees Celsius. But until the document is finalized, negotiations continue at a frantic pace. In fact, the signatures may “fall” during the weekend, until the nearly 200 countries find the golden section.

What does the draft provide for?

In the draft, among other things, you are asking countries to reduce emissions at an even faster rate. In fact, they should now show the progress they make each year, instead of the five years provided for in previous agreements.

In terms of financial assistance to the poorest countries, the new draft stipulates that developed countries must not just catch up, but exceed the $ 100 billion a year target. This commitment remains a thorn in the side of countries and the finalization of the text.

However, the main concern of analysts is that the document is insufficient in relation to the size of the problem and the terminology used to reduce the use of coal and other fossil fuels, leaves room for misinterpretation. Of course, it is recognized that the Glasgow Conference will be the first in history to mention fossil fuels.

In “mechanical support” the goal of 1.5 degrees Celsius

Today, however, United Nations President Antonio Guterres acknowledged that “the necessary goals will probably not be met and that efforts to maintain the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius are in” mechanical support “.

To reverse the rise in temperature, emissions must be reduced by 45% by 2030 and reached zero by 2050, which does not seem realistic based on what was discussed at the conference.
