The fifth episode of the seventh season of the series “Black Mirror”, entitled “Eulogy” was inspired by the documentary “The Beatles: Get Back” (2021) according to the creators themselves of Netflix production.
The story of “Eulogy” focuses on Phillip (Paul Giamatti), a very closed and isolated man who, one day, receives a call from a representative on behalf of a woman named Kelly Royce (Patsy Ferran), informing him that Kelly’s mother Carol, her ex-girlfriend, died and that her family would like his help with the memorial.
Phillip accepts a package with a technology that allows users to insert old photos to create a funeral compliment for someone who died. The man then seeks records of the past with Carol, but the photos appear torn or scratched.
To be able to remember the ex more vividly, technology allows Phillip to “get in” in photographs. Throughout the episode, he remembers the good and bad times he lived alongside Carol.
Director Charlie Brooker and screenwriter Ella Road told Netflix that they wrote the episode after seeing the British band documentary – used technology to improve images and extract vocals from John Lennon allowing the modern audience to see and listen more clearly.
Understand the end of “Eulogy”
About the bittersweet end of the episode, Charlie Brooker explained that Phillip “realized he turned her into a villain in his head.”
“That was his narrative, which she was just a terrible person with him and did a horrible thing. He has a new vision of what she was going through, something he didn’t allow himself to see [na época]. As a result, he falls in love with her again at the end, which is bittersweet because she is gone, ”he said on Netflix’s official website.
Ferran, who plays Kelly, understood the episode as a story about embracing her own humanity. “We make mistakes, we just need to be more compassionate with ourselves and others,” she said.
The seventh season debuted six episodes last Thursday (10).
