The family and band of Erasmo Carlos, who died in Rio de Janeiro this Tuesday (22), informed in an official note that the artist’s wake will be closed to family and friends. The location where the farewell ceremony will take place has not been announced.
“Whoever wants to honor him, listen to his songs, his messages. Nothing would make him happier and more loved!”, said the statement, also signed by Hospital Barra D’Or, where he had been hospitalized since the 2nd.
Erasmo had been admitted to the hospital since the 2nd with panniculitis complicated by sepsis of cutaneous origin. On the same day, the 2nd of this month, the artist even celebrated his hospital discharge, after 17 days in the unit.
Tremendão, as Erasmo was also known, was still actively working and at the weekend he was one of the winners of the Latin Grammy for Best Rock or Alternative Music Album in Portuguese with “O Futuro Pertence À… Jovem Guarda”. He also used his Instagram profile to celebrate. It was his last official profile post.
Over more than 60 years of career, there were more than 680 songs and 640 recordings. The artist was married and has three children.
A pioneer in Brazilian rock, Erasmo was part of Jovem Guarda, a Brazilian cultural movement of the 1960s, alongside Roberto Carlos and other great names in music that marked generations and the history of Brazilian music.
His career began in his teens, in the 1950s, when he joined the band The Sputniks, alongside Tim Maia, Roberto Carlos, Arlênio Lívio, Edson Trindade and Wellington Oliveira.
After the disagreement between Tim Maia and Robertos Carlos, Erasmo and other friends from Tijuca, in the north zone of Rio, where the artist grew up, formed The Boys of The Rock, which later came to be called The Snakes. The group accompanied the two singers on their respective concerts.
After the end of the group in 1961, a few years later, the musician returned to accompany Roberto Carlos. This time on the recording of “Splish Splash”, in a Portuguese version made by Erasmo. The album’s success was the birth of the legendary partnership between Roberto and Erasmo.
At this time, he began to compose verses for various artists.
In 1965, alongside Robertos Carlos and Wanderléa, Erasmo debuted the program Jovem Guarda, on Record TV, which gave its name to the musical movement influenced by British pop that introduced rock in Brazil. The program ran for three years and placed the trio among the main names in Brazilian rock.
In the 1970s, the musician had his roots influenced by MPB, which generated several albums mixing rock with Brazilian popular music.
Over a 60-year career, the musician has released 29 albums and 5 live albums. Erasmo accumulates several successful partnerships with artists such as Renato Russo, Leo Jaime, Kid Abelha, Tim Maia and, of course, Roberto Carlos.
As an actor, he has participated in six films. His last appearance was in Netflix’s “Airplane Mode”.
Friends, such as Boninho, artistic director of TV Globo, mourned the loss of the artist.
