Turkey’s fourth drilling ship sailed today from the port of Tasuçu in Mersina. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the “Abdulhamit Khan” will operate at a distance of 55 kilometers from the Turkish coast of Antalya, in an area that is outside the waters claimed by Cyprus.
“We will send the Abdulhamit Khan vessel to the Yörükler-1 field, 55 kilometers outside Gazipasa (located near the ancient Selinunda of Cilicia). The Yörükler-1 well is the first step of our comprehensive operational plan in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
Erdogan, speaking during a ceremony in Mersina, said that the area where the ship will operate is within the territory of Turkey and that “we do not need to get permission from anyone” to drill there.
“Our drilling rig Abdulhamit Khan is the symbol of Turkey’s new vision in the energy sector. We are now in this area with our 4 drilling vessels and 2 seismic survey vessels,” Erdogan said. And he added that they plan to put Black Sea natural gas at the nation’s service next year.
Expressing his gratitude to whoever contributed to making Turkey one of the “leading” countries in oil and gas drilling, President Erdogan noted that it was not easy for the country to reach its current drilling point.
“We have long been immobilized either by malicious plots or well-intentioned but cowardly choices at times, or even outright betrayals at other times. We have wasted time and resources,” he said.
“As we set our country’s goals for 2023, we saw that our dependence on foreign energy is one of the problems that we need to solve first. We decided to carry out this process with our own human resources, our own data infrastructure and our technological tools in order to eliminate the intimidation caused by wells that have been drilled and covered with concrete for years,” Erdogan said.
Donmez: “We will not give up an inch of our rights to the Blue Homeland”
Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Domez said the Abdulhamit, the most “powerful” of Turkey’s drilling fleet, would drill exploratory wells in the Eastern Mediterranean and said: “We will not give up an inch of our rights to ” Blue Homeland”, he said and added “we were here yesterday, we are here today and we will be here tomorrow”.
Declaring that it had “opened a new page” in drilling operations that began with the Fatih drillship and continued with the Yavuz and Kanuni, Donmez said: “The seventh-generation drillship, the most powerful in our fleet, the Abdulhamit Khan, will embark on the first mission to the Mediterranean with the prayers and hopes of our nation. His assignment here is expected to be about 2 months,” he said.
