THE Turkey formally requests the United Nations and other international organizations to change the spelling of its name from Turkey in Türkiye, said today the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Tsavousoglu.
Ankara will send an official letter to all relevant international parties today and expects the official name change to be made official later this week, Tsavousoglu said in an interview with the state-run Turkish news agency Anadolu.
THE UN is “ready” for change and Ankara has promoted the change to Türkiye from the English name Turkey in most of its international correspondence, including foreign news coverage, the Turkish minister added.
The move to rename follows a decree issued by the president in December. Recep Tayyip Erdogan to change the name to Türkiye in English, French and German, among other languages, and on the labels of export products.
The term Türkiye “Represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation in the best way”, referred to Erdogan’s decree, according to Anadolu.
The German Agency notes that the exact reason behind this renaming attempt, as well as the time in which it takes place is not clear.
State-run TRT television in December cited “non-flattering” connotations of the word Turkey in English, saying it referred either to “a large bird native to North America” or “something badly failing”.
