The president of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan canceled his scheduled public appearances, today and tomorrow, for health reasons, while just a few weeks left until the crucial elections of May 14.
“Today I will rest at home, following the recommendation of my doctors“, the 69-year-old Erdogan said earlier in a post on Twitter.
A few hours later, the vice president of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) announced that Erdogan will participate via video link in tomorrow’s ceremony for the inauguration of the nuclear power plant in Akougiou and that the election rally in Mersina is also postponed.
On Wednesday night, Erdogan obliged to interrupt a live TV interview due to indisposition, which was later attributed to stomach disorders.
The Turkish president had planned to attend the ceremony in Akuyu and last month had left open the possibility of a joint appearance with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. “Mr Putin may come to Turkey for the opening ceremony. Otherwise you may join it online”Erdogan had said in a televised interview he gave on March 29.
According to the schedule, the first reactor at Akuyu will be commissioned this year and the project is not expected to be completed before 2025. The construction of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey was agreed in 2010 with a subsidiary of the Russian state company Rosatom. The nuclear plant in the province of Mersin, on Turkey’s southern coast, will have four reactors with a total capacity of 4.8 GW.
The May 14 election represents the biggest challenge yet to Turkey’s longest-serving leader in modern times, with polls suggesting Erdogan faces defeat after two decades in power.
