Erdogan cannot be a candidate – “Bombshell” from the former president of the Supreme Electoral Council

The statements of the former president of the Supreme Electoral Council, who claims that Recep Tayyip Erdogan cannot be a candidate for a third time in an electoral process, fell like a “bomb” in Turkey.

Algan, told the “Yeniçağ” newspaper, that the Turkish president cannot be a candidate for a third time. “CHP chairman and opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu has argued in the past that Erdogan cannot run for a third term. Based on my experience I believe the same, that he cannot be a candidate. He could only run if the National Assembly calls early elections,” Algan said.

It is worth noting that the Supreme Electoral Council on March 24 unanimously accepted the request of Recep Tayyip Erdogan to run for a third time. Thus, on the one hand, he gave him the “green light” for a possible third term, but on the other hand, it raised many questions as to whether his decision is legal, since the Constitution does not provide for a third term.

The key to the answer

Erdogan was first elected president in 2014. In 2017 he amended the Constitution, and then the two-term limit was adopted. Erdogan was elected president for the second time in 2018. He considers that after the change of the Constitution he has been elected once in 2018. So now he has the right to be re-elected for the second and last time.

When he was first accused by his opponent in the presidential elections, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, of interpreting the Constitution based on his personal interest. Erdoğan replied that with the change of the Constitution, his first term was “erased”.
