Erdogan changed the Minister of Commerce overnight

The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan today appointed a prominent member of the ruling AKP party, Memet Mouss, as the new Minister of Trade and divided the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy into two ministries.

By presidential decree, Ruhsar Pekcan was replaced by Mouss as head of the Ministry of Commerce. Mous has been a member of Erdogan’s AKP since 2011 and has served as the party’s vice president for the economy.

The decree, published in the Government Gazette, does not state the reason for the change. However, this came after opposition politicians accused the Pekjan ministry of buying supplies from the company, which belongs to the minister’s family, and demanded her resignation. reports APE-MPE citing Reuters.

The Ministry of Commerce confirmed that the purchase of disinfectants was indeed made, but stated in a statement yesterday, Tuesday, that the choice of the company was based only on the price and is not due “to its name”. According to the ministry, the sale, worth about 500,000 Turkish lira (51,000 euros), took place within the framework of the regulations in force.

The changes Erdogan made overnight came amid rumors of a wider government reshaping.

The president created two new ministries, splitting the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy into two separate ministries, according to the decree. He appointed Deria Yannick as Minister of Family and Social Policy and Vedat Bilgin as Minister of Labor and Social Security, replacing Zehra Zumrut Selcuk.
