Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called his French counterpart Emanuel Macron today to congratulate him on his re-election to the French presidency, stressing the importance of bilateral relations between Ankara and Paris for Europe, according to the Turkish presidency.
It was the first telephone conversation between the two leaders since Macron’s April 24 victory over far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.
The two leaders discussed “measures to improve Turkish-French relations” as well as the war between Russia and Ukraine, the Turkish presidency said.
Paris and Ankara have been trying for more than a year to improve their bilateral relationship, which has been hit by a series of disputes over the Eastern Mediterranean, with an incident between a Turkish ship and a French ship in June 2020, as well as Libya or Syria.
In October 2020, Erdogan questioned Macron’s “mental health” and accused him of waging a “hate campaign” against Islam.
Last week, the Turkish president told Turkish media that the defeat of Marin Lepen was a “victory” against “extremism”. Le Pen had specifically proposed banning the use of the Islamic headscarf in public places.
