Erdogan – Meloni meeting in Istanbul

According to Italian government sources, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which took place tonight in Istanbul, lasted two and a half hours.

The main topics of discussion, as the Italian newspaper La Repubblica writes on its website, were immigration – in particular the flows from Libya to Lower Italy, via the sea route – security in the Mediterranean, commercial transactions between the two countries and the situation in Middle East and Ukraine.

Italian sources report that sea flows of irregular migrants from Turkey to Italy decreased by 56% last year. The two countries, at the same time, according to La Repubblica, intend to increase their cooperation also with regard to Libya. Today's meeting, finally, according to sources in the Rome government, was an opportunity to discuss the issue of European Union-Turkey relations, from an economic, political and commercial point of view.
