Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on NATO to take a “more decisive stance” on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reaffirming its support for Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity.
Erdo .an, who has been balancing on a tightrope for a long time, as he also maintains warm relations with Russia, wished that today’s meeting of the leaders of the 30 NATO countries would move in the direction of this stronger position.
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul before attending the “30” teleconference, the Turkish president said that “condemnations of the invasion alone are not enough”.
“The European Union and the West have so far not shown a truly decisive stance,” he said.
On Thursday, Erdogan had a telephone conversation with French President Emanuel Macron, focusing on the issue of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Later in the night, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu had a telephone conversation with his US counterpart Anthony Blinken on the same subject.
According to the Turkish Foreign Minister, the head of Turkish diplomacy told Mr. Blinken that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “is a clear violation of international law.”
Ankara, despite its relations with Russia, has called on Moscow to end its “unjust and illegal military operations in Ukraine” as soon as possible.
