Erdogan-Solz talks in Ankara today

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will hold talks in Ankara today on the war in Ukraine with German Chancellor Olaf Solz, the Turkish presidency said as the two countries pressed for a ceasefire 19 days after the Russian invasion.

Turkey, which is a member of NATO, shares a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea and has good relations with both.

Ankara has called the invasion unacceptable and has expressed support for Ukraine, but at the same time has opposed sanctions against Moscow and offered to mediate.

Ukraine announced yesterday that it is working with Turkey and Israel on mediators to set up a venue and framework for talks with Russia following the hosting last week of the first high-level talks between the foreign ministers of the two warring parties.

Today’s visit to Turkey will be Solz’s first since taking office in December 2021 as part of German efforts to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the invasion of Ukraine.

Germany and France have taken the lead within the EU to end the war.

“Apart from bilateral ties, an exchange of views is expected on regional and international issues, especially on Ukraine and on Turkey-EU relations,” the Turkish presidency said.

Turkey says it can facilitate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, but says there should be a ceasefire and the creation of humanitarian corridors first.

Turkey also says its citizens are in areas affected by Russian forces and has sought Moscow’s support in removing them while providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
