Turkey supports Ukraine’s fight for territorial integrity and sees Russia’s attack as a “heavy blow” to regional stability and peace, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday, reiterating his call for a solution to the crisis through dialogue.

“This action, which we consider to be contrary to international law, is a severe blow to regional peace, harmony and stability,” Erdogan said, adding that he had conveyed Turkey’s support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zhelensky. he had a telephone conversation on Thursday, according to Reuters.

He also said that Turkey, which shares maritime borders with both Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea, sees both countries as friendly, adding that he “sincerely regrets” that Moscow and Kiev are in conflict.

It should be noted that he kept silent about Ukraine’s request for the closure of the Bosphorus.

Earlier, Ukraine’s ambassador to Ankara said Kiev had asked Turkey to close the Bosphorus and Hellespont straits to Russia and expected solidarity and sanctions from Ankara.

Earlier, the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine, calling on Moscow to immediately end its military operations.

In particular, according to Reuters, the Turkish Foreign Minister stressed that Russia’s attack on Ukraine is a violation of international law and a threat to global security.

He called the Russian military operation “unacceptable” and called on Moscow to immediately stop its “unjust and illegal” actions.
