Erdogan: Turkey will not wait for Washington ‘permission’ for a new attack on Syria

Turkey will not wait for the “permission” of the United States to launch a new attack on Syria, said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to statements broadcast by Turkish media today.

“We can not fight terrorism by waiting for permission from anyone,” the Turkish president told a group of journalists on his return from a visit to Azerbaijan.

“What will we do if the United States does not do its part in the fight against terrorism? We will do it alone,” he said in response to a warning from Washington.

The United States, through State Department spokesman Ned Price, said Tuesday it was “deeply concerned” by Erdogan’s announcement Monday that a new Turkish military operation would be launched in northern Syria to provide security in Ankara. “30 km wide at its border.

“We condemn any escalation. We support the maintenance of the existing ceasefire lines,” Price said.

Since 2016, Ankara has carried out three attacks in northern Syria against the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the Kurdish militia that Ankara considers terrorist. However, the YPG was supported by the US mainly in the fight against the jihadists of the Islamic State organization.
