Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to show no mercy to those trying to divide Turkey and thwart any kind of conspiracy, in a speech marking the 951st anniversary of the Battle of Mandzikert.
“We will show no mercy to anyone who tries to divide our country and overthrow our state,” Erdogan said during ceremonies in the eastern province of Mazıkert (renamed Malazgirt in Turkish) district of Mus city on 26 August.
Erdogan and his closest ally, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader and Gray Wolves leader Devlet Bakhceli, attended the two-day ceremonies in the region. Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the MHP are partners in the People’s Alliance.
“We will never forget Mandzikert and we will never let it be forgotten. We will always keep it alive in our hearts and minds,” the president said, describing the victory not only for Turks but for the entire Islamic world. “Manjikert was the first and mother of all other victories we have won in this region,” he said.
The people of Turkey must remain united and defend their unity, Erdogan said. “We have zero tolerance for any attack, game or plan. We will not forgive anyone who targets our freedom, symbolized by our flag.”
Erdogan reminded that Turkey will celebrate its centenary next year and that is why they had announced the “2023 goals” a decade ago, saying: “We have made a promise to our people about our goals for 2023. You are ready to work for the 2023 elections as a People’s Alliance?”
He reminded that Turkey will celebrate the 600th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul in 2053 and the 1,000th anniversary of the Victory of Manzikert in 2071, stressing that this is why they are preparing the visions of 2053 and 2071 for Turkey.
“Our recent history marked the 19th century as the age of collapse and the 20th century as the age of resurrection. In the 21st we will see the rise of our civilization,” he noted.
