Erdogan vowed to invade Syria to create a dead zone

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to launch a military invasion of northern Syria targeting US-backed Kurdish forces.

In his speech, he reiterated his call for a 30-kilometer (19-mile) safe zone in northern Syria, which would be achieved by ousting YPG forces, an armed group predominantly Kurdish that Ankara considers a terrorist organization.

“We will address the lack of a safe haven we have created on our southern border through new businesses,” the president said at a rally of AKP lawmakers on Saturday.

Regarding his government’s veto of Sweden and Finland’s applications to join NATO, Erdogan lamented European countries’ support for Kurdish groups, saying that the war in Ukraine and talks on expanding the alliance importance of Turkey inside.

“I make it very clear to them,” he said. “A depth of 30 kilometers from our border is considered our security zone and we do not want attacks to be launched against us from this area.” “We are working on measures for this and we will take these measures,” he said.
