Erdogan vows to send 15m doses of Turkish coronavirus vaccine to Africa

Turkey will send 15 million doses of its vaccine against Covid-19 “Turkovac” to Africa, President Tayyip Erdogan announced today at the Turkey-Africa summit in Istanbul.

“It is a shame for humanity that only 6% of the African population has been vaccinated against Covid-19,” Erdogan told African leaders at the summit.

Turkey will work to help overcome “global injustice” and “unfair treatment” of Africa during the pandemic, the Turkish president added.

Turkey has already applied for the emergency use of Turkovac and the installments will be shared with Africa when the permit is issued, the Turkish president added.

It is not yet clear when the aid will be sent.

The number of cases on the African continent is growing at the fastest rate to date, especially in South Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned this week.

Erdogan said Ankara is committed to further strengthening its trade ties with Africa.

Turkey has 43 embassies in 54 African countries and major investments on the continent – from humanitarian and social assistance programs to energy, defense and infrastructure projects.

A total of 16 leaders and 102 ministers are attending the Istanbul summit, the third such summit, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said yesterday.
