The Franco-Italian SAMP-T long-range anti-aircraft system wants to be purchased by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, as he revealed after his meeting on Tuesday with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, according to the website skai.gr.
Erdogan said he already discussed the issue in detail with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the recent NATO Summit.
“We want to arrive an hour earlier at the signature phase for SAMP-T. We want the signatures to come in. Because this is of great importance for our defense systems. On this issue with the Prime Minister (of Italy) we fully agreed, there is no problem. As we also agreed with Macron. I wish as soon as possible to sign and move forward,” he emphasized.
According to skai.gr, if the purchase of the Italian-French system goes ahead, it will allow Erdogan to make a maneuver in relation to the Russian S-400 system in order to then request an end to the sanctions against Turkey, which would also satisfy the USA.
Turkish analysts are worried about Greek equipment
At the same time, there is concern in Turkey about Greece’s equipment, with analysts warning that the steps taken by Athens in the defense sector are significant and should alarm Ankara.
“No threat can be underestimated because the plan has to be done according to what they are doing. Greece is trying to buy 20 F-35s, it is buying F-16s, as well as cruisers from the US. Rapid increase in defense spending,” he told Haber Global Naim Baburoglu, University Professor and Political Analyst.
