Erdogan: We provided military support to Ukraine in a way that NATO allies could not

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that it was too early to comment on the possible purchase of more Russian weapons from Turkey, given Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, and that Ankara would decide after seeing what the conditions were.

Speaking in Ankara with German Chancellor Olaf Soltz, Erdogan said Turkey had provided military support to Ukraine in a way that NATO allies could only do with its ties to Russia. Ankara continued to send support to Kyiv, he said.

In his speech, Erdogan said: “We will continue our efforts to establish a permanent ceasefire without hesitation,” he said of the Russia-Ukraine war.

“In taking European security measures, we have agreed to step up diplomatic efforts towards a solution,” Erdogan said.

Regarding relations with Germany, Erdogan spoke in the language of money: “I believe that our high-level consultation mechanism with Germany must be revived. Our Foreign Ministers will meet with each other and hold our High-Level Meeting in Turkey. “Germany is Turkey’s first partner in exports and second in imports. Our trade volume has exceeded $ 41 billion in 2021 and we are determined to increase that to $ 50 billion.”
