Erdogan: We, Turkey, feel in our hearts the acute pain of our Palestinian brothers

The Turkish government declared three days of national mourning on Wednesday, the day after an attack on a hospital in Gaza City with hundreds of dead, for which Israel and the Palestinians blamed each other. “As a mark of respect for the thousands of martyrs, most of whom were children and innocent civilians, three days of national mourning are declared in our country,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said via X (formerly Twitter).

“We, Turkey, feel in our hearts the acute pain of our Palestinian brothers,” the Turkish head of state added.

On Tuesday night, President Erdogan called for “an end to this unprecedented barbarity in Gaza”, accusing Israel of “hitting a hospital” where “women, children and innocent civilians” were.

Yesterday, Wednesday, Mr. Erdogan denounced the “crime against humanity” which he described as “comparable to genocide against the population of Gaza”, as reported by international agencies and relayed by the Athens News Agency.

The Israeli army said yesterday that it has “evidence” that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization was responsible for the attack. This version was embraced by US President Joe Biden, during his visit to Israel.

The blow caused intense emotional reactions in Turkey, where about 80,000 people demonstrated the day before Tuesday night in front of the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, according to the authorities’ calculations, while yesterday, for the second night in a row, thousands of people gathered there to denounce the policy of the Jewish state, as well as in front of the US consulate.

New demonstration in front of the Israeli consulate in Istanbul

Meanwhile, thousands of people gathered on Wednesday, for the second night in a row, in front of the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, where they denounced the policy of the Jewish state, as the pounding of the Gaza Strip continues in retaliation for the deadly attack by Hamas on Israeli territory on October 7th.

Crowds also gathered outside the US consulate, whose president Joe Biden went to Tel Aviv yesterday to express support for Israel, which has come under an unprecedented attack this month.

Many protesters waved Palestinian flags, others held placards blaming Israel for the deaths of hundreds of children in the Gaza Strip.

“Close the Zionist consulate!” protestors demanded in front of the two diplomatic missions.

A crowd gathered last Tuesday night in front of the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, hours after the deadly attack on a hospital in Gaza City, for which Israel and the Palestinians blamed each other, became known.

In the demonstration, 60 injuries were reported, mostly to police officers, after protesters tried to force open the entrance to the building where the Israeli consulate is located.
