Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to visit Saudi Arabia on Thursday, according to Reuters and the French News Agency (AFP), citing government sources in Ankara. Erdogan is expected to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as Ankara seeks to restore relations with Riyadh.
Relations between the two countries were strained after the assassination of journalist Jamal Kasogi in October 2018, inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. President Erdogan has accused top Saudi government officials, including Prince Mohammed, of involvement in the killing of a Saudi journalist and of obstructing an investigation into the case.
Ankara’s comments at the time, which came amid international outcry, sparked an unofficial Saudi boycott of Turkish products. Since then, Ankara has adopted softer tones and gone so far as to argue that there are no “thorns” in relations between the two countries.
Turkey has been working since 2020 to normalize relations with several Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. He has approached Gulf countries seeking financial support to tackle rampant inflation and rising energy prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Last month, Riyadh asked Ankara to refer the judicial inquiry into Kasogi’s murder to Saudi authorities, a request accepted by Turkish justice on April 7th.
