Erdogan’s new “bargain”: Sweden’s accession to NATO, only if Turkey’s accession to the EU is “unlocked”

Ankara will support Sweden’s NATO membership if Brussels resumes Turkey’s EU accession negotiations, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

First pave the way for Turkey’s accession to the European Union and then we will pave the way for Sweden”Erdogan said on the eve of the start of the annual NATO summit in Lithuania.

Speaking ahead of his departure for the alliance’s summit in Vilnius, Erdogan added that Sweden’s membership depends on the implementation of an agreement reached last summer during the alliance’s summit in Madrid, adding that no one should he expects compromises from Ankara.

The Turkish president also noted that an end to the war between Ukraine and Russia would facilitate the process for Kyiv’s accession to NATO.
