A question concerning the United States and the sale of F-16 fighters was received by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from invited journalists on the return plane from Tehran, where he met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, as well as Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
Erdogan simply chose to indirectly threaten Biden with the phrase “mid-term elections are coming in the US,” saying that Democrats are expected to fall short of a majority in the House of Representatives.
At the same time, the Turkish president stated that the condition set by the House of Representatives to ensure that the F-16 fighter jets that may be sold to Ankara are not used to violate Greece’s airspace is not binding.
“Of course, when we discussed these issues with Mr. Biden, Biden did not impose such a condition on Greece. On the contrary, in our long meeting we said that as NATO member countries we must protect each other’s rights. ‘We will do my best,’ he said of the F16s. Unfortunately right now there are those who oppose this work in the House of Representatives, even a little bit. When we see the current developments, in my opinion, such a condition is not binding condition for us. They say yes to our offer for the F-16s, but they give us zero F-16s. We are already able to do the maintenance and repair of what we have. We have no problem with that. But of course, we have some parts requirements. They decided not to do that. There are also mid-term elections in America in November. It is also something important. We will see what the mid-term elections in November bring. There are reports that the Republicans will start in the Senate and will take the burden again in the House of Representatives,” Erdogan said.
Repeating his threat to veto Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership if the two countries do not keep their promises, Turkey’s president said almost all northern European countries had turned into “nests of terrorism” and added that NATO member countries Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Britain also allow organizations that Turkey considers to be terrorist organizations to operate freely.
