Erdogan’s threats to Finland-Sweden: Realize their promises or their accession will not reach our parliament

LAST UPDATE: 18:43

The terms of the memorandum we signed with Sweden and Finland must be understood, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during remarks after the NATO summit in Madrid.

“Turkey sees the memorandum with Sweden and Finland as a recognition of Turkey’s sensitivity on the issue of terrorism,” Erdogan said, adding that “the agreement is a diplomatic victory” as it included all of Turkey’s concerns.

“As a country that has been fighting terrorism for 40 years, we have no patience. What happened during the application process of Sweden and Finland exposed our red lines. The triple memorandum is a diplomatic victory. We have adopted a constructive attitude. It is for keeping the promises. We will strictly follow the memorandum”.

Sweden has promised to extradite 73 terrorists to us, the Turkish president has revealed.

Turning to the main topic, Ukraine, he said that over the weekend he would try to contact Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and Vladimir Putin of Russia on the issue of transporting Ukrainian grain.

Then he moved into the realm of threats: “Finland and Sweden must first realize their promises, otherwise the ratification of the agreement will not reach the Turkish parliament.”

“Finland and Sweden must first complete the terrorist legislative changes as soon as possible,” he said.

Referring to the meeting with US President Joe Biden, Erdogan said that during their meeting they did not discuss the US sanctions imposed on Turkey, but added that there were positive developments on this issue during the talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries.

Erdogan also said that Biden told him in their meeting that he will do everything he can in the US Congress regarding Turkey’s request to buy US F-16 jets.

He also said that Turkey has offered to operate the Kabul airport in Afghanistan together with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and that he is waiting for the Taliban’s response to this proposal.

Greece must be held accountable for violations of Turkish airspace

Meanwhile, as Reuters reports, the Turkish president during a press conference in Madrid at the end of the NATO summit, said that Greece violated Turkish airspace 147 times, and must be held accountable for it.

According to the news agency, it was not clear in what period of time the alleged violations occurred.
