Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson said on Tuesday that it expects active 5G lines to exceed 1 billion in 2022 worldwide, helped by greater adoption of the technology in China and North America.
A weaker global economy and uncertainties caused by the war in Ukraine have reduced the company’s estimate for this year by about 100 million hits, the company said in a biannual report.
Ericsson, which competes with China’s Huawei and Finland’s Nokia, is a leading provider of equipment for mobile operators.
While 5G accesses grew by 70 million during the first quarter to around 620 million, 4G lines also grew by 70 million to around 4.9 billion.
It is estimated that 5G accesses will reach 4.4 billion in 2027 worldwide.
The growth of 4G lines is expected to peak this year and then decline as users migrate to 5G, the report said. Ericsson previously expected 4G access to peak last year.
If the global market reaches 1 billion 5G users in 2022, that will mark a faster performance than 4G, which reached its first billion hits 10 years after the technology was launched.
An effort by telecom operators to cut prices for 5G and handsets as low as $120 has helped the technology’s adoption, Peter Jonsson, executive editor of the report, said in an interview.
“China added around 270 million users in 2021 compared to North America, which added 65 million.”
India, which is in the process of auctioning 5G frequencies, is expected to drive global market growth from the end of this year.
“We expect around 30 million 5G subscribers in India in 2022 and around 50 million in 2023,” said Jonsson.
