Ericsson will not attend the Mobile World Congress 2021 and the fair is in danger again

The 2021 Mobile World Congress could follow in the footsteps of the 2020 edition and have to be canceled due to the pandemic. Although the GSMA announced yesterday its intention to continue with the fair with all possible security measures, Ericsson has confirmed that will not attend the Barcelona show, which could trigger a new series of cancellations.

Last year LG was the first major technology company to get off the bandwagon. Ericsson itself, Nvidia, Sony or Amazon made the same decision in the following days and finally the MWC had to be suspended for health reasons just a week after LG announced its decision.

“In view of the continuing effects of Covid-19 and taking into account that our main responsibility is the health and well-being of our people, we have decided not participate in MWC 2021″the company explained in a statement.

The firm regrets the decision, but believes it reflects its cautious approach to the pandemic from a personnel perspective and in terms of travel “while vaccination programs are developed globally.” In any case, they do not close the door to attend future events.

On this occasion, the GSMA, the association that organizes the event, had delayed its celebration until the end of June (between 28 of that month and 1 July, specifically), instead of holding it in February, as is tradition. However, even this does not seem to have convinced LG.

“We have worked with our partners, health authorities and medical professionals to create a plan that gives confidence after the face-to-face events,” John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA, recently said in a press release. “MWC21 can be carried out without security, in person and with a digital component online for those who cannot attend.”
