The National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANP) held, on Wednesday (13) an auction of 379 blocks in 14 areas of seven sea and land basins for the exploration and production of oil and natural gas in the country.
CNN Environment Specialist Erika Bechara commented this Thursday (14th) about oil and gas exploration.
“In the age of the climate emergency that we live in today, oil and gas exploration raises an even louder environmental alarm,” said Bechara.
“Fossil fuels are the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world. Not in Brazil because our biggest contribution comes from deforestation. Even so, this sector represents 18% of our emissions.”
THE CNN Specialist He also stated that this activity generates an impact on the environment, traditional communities and artisanal fishermen – and this can be even greater depending on the area granted.
“That is why some bids are so troubled, even with lawsuits filed to try to exclude these sensitive areas from the concession – as occurred in 2019 in the Abrolhos region, in Bahia, and in 2021 in the Potiguar Basin, near Fernando de Noronha. and Rocas Atoll.”
