Escort driven by Princess Diana sells for $850,000 at auction

One Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 1 directed by the late Princess Diana raised 724,500 pounds (US$ 851,070 or R$ 4,342,000) in an auction held at Silverstone, UK, this Saturday (28).

Silverstone’s website describes the car as the Princess of Wales’ last Ford Escort, having driven 24,961 miles (40,200 km). The vehicle belonged to the Princess of Wales between 1985 and 1988.

Diana was often seen driving the car through Chelsea and Kensington and drove 6,800 miles before returning it to Ford. Upon return, the car had several owners before returning to the automaker’s possession, according to Silverstone’s website.

The website does not mention the auction winner.

The RS Turbo Series 1 was usually white, but the royal police guard asked that Diana’s be painted black “out of discretion,” auctioneers said.

For the princess to drive the vehicle was “a very brave choice,” said Arwel Richards, a classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions.

Next week marks the 25th anniversary of Diana’s death. She died at the age of 36 when a limousine she was a passenger in crashed into a Paris tunnel while fending off paparazzi following her on motorbikes.
