Estonia and Finland are working together to break free from Russian energy

Estonia will stop importing Russian oil and instead lease a liquefied natural gas import terminal with Finland by the autumn, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said.

“We must stop buying gas from the Putin regime, which is using the money in the war against Ukraine, as soon as possible,” he told a news conference in Tallinn.

Her government has not set a date for ending imports from Russia. It will lease the LNG terminal until the fall and buy commissions worth 1 tw / h.

At the same time, Finland announced that it would invest up to 850 million euros to ensure that it would meet its energy needs, and to accelerate its independence from Russian supply.

Finland, which has invested in nuclear energy in the past, is already less dependent on Russian energy than many other European countries, but the government wants to cut ties.

In 2019, oil imports accounted for 22% of Finland’s total energy consumption, 7% for coal and just 5% for natural gas, according to data from the Bank of Finland and the statistical office.

Referring to the joint rental of an LNG terminal with Estonia, Finance Minister Mika Lintila stressed that “after that we will have the ability to operate independently”.

In addition to the terminal, investments will be made in measures such as ensuring an adequate energy supply for the next winter in the northern hemisphere.

The government said it needed to temporarily reduce climate change measures to mitigate the impact of the sharp rise in energy prices, although its long-term goal is to accelerate Finland’s shift to green energy through investment.
