Estonia has completed the first part of a wall on its border with Russia

Estonian authorities have completed the first phase of fortifications on the country’s border with Russia, according to police and the Baltic state’s border guard.

The 23.5km section of the wall in the southeastern part of the EU and NATO member state was completed yesterday, Thursday, a year before the deadline.

Video distributed by the border guard shows part of the wall, two meters high, with barbed wire at the top and sophisticated surveillance systems.

“We live in a time when border security is more important than ever,” said Border Guards chief Egert Belichev, referring indirectly but clearly to Russia’s war with Ukraine.

He also recalled the crisis at the EU’s eastern external borders last year, when thousands of migrants and refugees tried to enter European countries illegally via Belarus.

Estonia began stepping up its 338-kilometer border with Russia a few years ago.
